Growing up, my family and I never referred to the beaches in Oregon as “the beach.” Like most Oregonians, we called it “the coast.” To me, “the beach” brings to mind images of palm trees, warm sunshine, and a gentle breeze. Visiting the coast as a child, however, was a completely different experience. Even during the warmer months, I’d be bundled up in a sweatshirt and windbreaker, bracing against the cool, misty air. Yet, many locals and visitors flock to Oregon’s stunning coastal towns during the summer to escape the heat. Now that I’m older, I have a newfound appreciation for the beautiful coastal landscapes, charming towns, and the rich, unique atmosphere the Oregon Coast offers.
The Oregon Coast is sprinkled with charming small towns, making a road trip along the iconic Oregon Coast Highway 101 one of the best ways to experience its beauty. This scenic route stretches an impressive 363 miles of public beaches, taking you from historic Astoria in the north to picturesque Brookings in the south. Along the way, you’ll find breathtaking views and countless opportunities to stop and explore. Let me share a few of my favorite must-see towns—places where I’ve created some of my most cherished memories.
Cannon Beach
Less than an hour from my childhood home, this beach town was where I spent much of my time growing up. It’s best known for its iconic Haystack Rock, a 235-foot-tall basalt formation created around 16 million years ago! This charming town is filled with restaurants, cafés, and candy shops, making it a quintessential coastal getaway. The Wayfarer Restaurant is a must-visit, offering breathtaking views right on the sand and some of the best seafood around—my favorite is the shrimp ceviche! 😊 Prefer to avoid big crowds? No problem! Just a 20-minute drive south, you’ll find Manzanita Beach, which is equally charming.

Known as “Oregon’s Coastal Playground,” this area is home to the largest stretch of coastal sand dunes in North America! If you’re a thrill-seeker like me, you absolutely have to go on a sand buggy tour. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is a world-famous destination that resembles the scenic golf courses of Scotland. Although I’m not an avid golfer, I have enjoyed my stay here. The course is right on the beach, making it the perfect spot for any golfer to take in the stunning views. Additionally, the resort offers multiple restaurants, bars, hiking trails, and even a shuttle service that takes you to nearby towns and attractions. It’s the perfect place for golfers and non-golfers!

Gold Beach
Calling all outdoor enthusiasts! This is one of the best beaches to enjoy all your favorite outdoor activities—hiking, fishing, windsurfing, and long walks on the beach. Camping here was always my favorite, nestled in the trees with just a short five-minute walk to the beach. But my favorite part? The jet boats! This thrilling boat ride takes you along the Rogue River at fast speeds, through bumpy whitewater rapids, while also slowing down to take in all the wildlife in the Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest. If I had to choose one place for you to visit, it would be Gold Beach. The memories I’ve made with my family here are some of the best!

Whether you are into outdoor adventures or just like to be cozy by the fire watching your fellow beachgoers, the Oregon Coast has something for everyone. There are so many other notable towns I did not mention, but I am thankful I get to share my favorite memories and places with you all.
