Do You Think You’ll Ever Win the Lottery?

I periodically buy lottery tickets, and like many others, try to figure out how I’d spend the $100M prize. I typically start with non-profits, and work through the bucket list, including looking after friends, family and co-workers. Admit it, we’ve all been there at least once. But when you look at the odds of winning, you might as well start saving for a Space-X trip to the moon, as there’s a greater likelihood of that happening.

Which is why on a recent trip to Australia, an alternative caught my attention.

The lottery is run by RSL Art Union, an organization providing essential support to current and ex-service men and women, as well as their families. As worthy a cause as any.

The differences with their model are that there is a limited number of tickets, you get volume discounts, you can pre-order; and prizes are for homes (actual address included) rather than cash – something that is more concrete and attainable, while still aspirational enough to motivate a purchase. You also know when purchasing a ticket, exactly where proceeds are going, unlike the lottery.

In writing this post, I realized that I actually spent more on these tickets than I ever have for a lottery here in the US… so there’s something to be said for the model. Check it out at: https://www.rslartunion.com.au/
